The tourist town gives the district its name, but the commercial centre of gravity sits at Haldwani in the plains. It is the gateway and wholesale hub for the whole of Kumaon — the point where goods coming up from the Terai are broken down and sent into the hill districts of Almora, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh and Champawat. Anything sold in those districts very largely passes through here first.

That makes Nainital district a distribution proposition rather than a local market one.
