A Milk Powder Plant converts liquid milk into shelf-stable powder — skimmed milk powder (SMP), whole milk powder (WMP), or dairy whitener. Raw milk is received, standardised and pasteurised, concentrated in a vacuum evaporator to around 48 to 52 percent total solids, then atomised in a spray dryer where hot air instantly removes moisture to form a free-flowing powder that is cooled, sifted and packed.
ATMAN Group designs and executes milk powder plants across the full capacity spectrum — from compact 10,000 LPD spray-drying units for FPOs and regional dairies, up to 1,000,000 LPD high-capacity SMP and WMP lines for state federations handling peak flush-season surplus.
Every plant integrates the wet process, multi-effect evaporator and spray dryer as one synchronised line — matched steam and refrigeration loads, compatible CIP circuits, and end-to-end moisture and bulk-density control.
Milk powder is how a dairy turns surplus flush-season milk into a shelf-stable, high-value commodity — and the dryer is where yield, solubility and bulk density are won or lost. A well-engineered evaporation-and-drying line is the difference between free-flowing, low-moisture powder and losses from scorched particles, poor solubility and fines carry-over. ATMAN sizes the evaporator, dryer and powder-handling around your milk intake and target SKU.

10-stage milk powder processing flow — ATMAN Group
Milk Powder Production — From Reception to Packing
A milk powder plant runs as a continuous concentrate-and-dry line: raw milk is received, tested and standardised, pasteurised, concentrated under vacuum, then spray-dried, cooled, sifted and packed to controlled moisture and bulk-density targets.
01. Milk Reception
Raw milk arrives by road tanker, is weighed, sampled and chilled to 4 degrees C in insulated silos before processing.
06. Pasteurization
Standardised milk is pasteurised at 80 to 95 degrees C; the heat-treatment intensity sets the low, medium or high-heat powder classification the buyer specifies.
02. Quality Testing & Standardization
Fat, SNF, acidity and adulterants are tested; the milk is standardised to the fat and SNF ratio required for the target powder.
07. Vacuum Evaporation
A multi-effect falling-film evaporator concentrates the milk under vacuum to roughly 48 to 52 percent total solids, removing most of the water economically before drying.
03. Clarification & Chilling
Milk is clarified to remove sediment and somatic cells, then centrifugally separated into skim and cream.
08. Spray Drying
Concentrate is atomised into hot filtered air at 180 to 200 degrees C inlet inside the drying chamber; moisture flashes off in seconds to form powder collected at the chamber base and cyclones.
04. Cream Separation
A high-speed centrifugal separator splits milk into skim and cream; for SMP the skim is dried, for WMP fat is restored to target.
05. Standardization
Skim and cream are re-blended to the exact fat target — full skim for SMP, restored fat for WMP, or whitener blends — ready for concentration and drying.
09. Fluid-Bed Drying and Packing
Powder is dried and cooled on a vibro fluid-bed, sifted, then packed into 25 kg bags or tins with nitrogen flush and metal detection before warehousing.
10. Dispatch / Packing Feed
Finished powder filled into 25 kg bags, bulk bins or consumer tins — nitrogen-flushed and metal-detected — ready for bulk dispatch, institutional supply or recombination.
ATMAN engineers all 10 stages as one integrated continuous line — from raw-milk reception through evaporation, spray drying and powder packing — sized to your milk intake and target powder type.

Capacity Options — From Compact to Industrial Scale
ATMAN engineers milk powder plants across the full capacity spectrum. Pick the tier that matches your projected Year-2 milk intake — and we engineer evaporator and dryer headroom for future expansion into your Day-1 build.
Spray drying looks simple — concentrate and dry. The reality: poor evaporator economy, scorched particles, low solubility and fines carry-over quietly destroy yield and quality. Drying execution is where engineering depth pays off. Here is what makes ATMAN the right partner.
Most equipment suppliers stop at the machine. ATMAN engineers the processing core and downstream packing as one system — matched piping, aligned CIP cycles, unified batch tracking. Zero split-vendor finger-pointing.
02
Single-Window Turnkey Execution
Design through commissioning and AMC under one contract. One team to call when the line throws an error at 2 AM. One accountable partner for plant uptime — not a vendor patchwork.
Milk powder manufacture is a thermally demanding discipline. Evaporator economy, spray-dryer control, powder solubility and heat-class management are baked into our playbooks since 2008.
05

Milk Powder Plant — FAQ
Capex varies widely with capacity, powder type, and evaporator and dryer technology. A compact spray-drying line starts in the low crores; large multi-effect-evaporator SMP and WMP plants run into tens of crores. The dryer, evaporator and powder-handling dominate cost — ATMAN sizes them to your milk intake and target product to avoid over-capitalising.
Typically 8 to 14 months from design freeze to commissioning, depending on capacity, civil readiness and long-lead items like the spray dryer and evaporator. ATMAN runs design, fabrication and civil in parallel to compress the schedule.
Start with the capacity that comfortably covers your assured milk procurement, then build evaporator, dryer and floor headroom for Year-3 growth. Over-sizing the dryer on day one wastes capex; under-sizing caps your powder output in flush season.
Mandatory: FSSAI licence (central or state by turnover), GPCB / state pollution-board consent, municipal NOC, factory licence, fire NOC, and electricity sanction. Recommended: ISO 22000, HACCP, and BIS where applicable. ATMAN engineers plants for full compliance by default — no costly retrofits after commissioning.
A spray-drying plant needs more height than footprint — the drying chamber and cyclones are tall. Plan for a multi-level drying tower plus wet-process, powder-packing, warehouse and utility areas; ATMAN provides a layout sized to your capacity.
SMP is dried skim milk with very low fat; WMP retains milk fat; dairy whitener adds sugar and stabilisers for tea and coffee use. The wet-process differs, but all share the same evaporation-and-spray-drying core — ATMAN engineers the line for your product mix.
